What Can Be Done With Ashes After Cremation?

Blog

When a loved one passes away and has made plans for cremation, it can often be difficult to determine what to do with the cremains. Cremation is becoming far more common, however, and numerous innovative methods have arisen to celebrate a loved one's life. There's no need to settle for an urn sitting on a mantle any longer—instead, you can opt for memorial art, jewelry, or another special way to remember your loved one. If you'd like to memorialize a loved one after they've been cremated, consider one of the following unique options:

Memorial Art

There are a wide variety of types of memorial art available that allow you to incorporate cremains. You can add a glass orb or suncatcher to your garden, opt for a clay or stone ornament, or choose a beautiful piece of artwork to display in your home. Individual artists can be found online or on Etsy, creating paperweights, beautiful glass orbs, display pieces, touchstones, and altar crystals.

Jewelry

You may also choose to incorporate your loved one's cremains into a unique piece of jewelry. You can opt to include the cremains into a small vial as part of a necklace, or you can have them worked into a stone or piece of glass that is included in the jewelry itself. Beautiful rings, pendants, necklaces, and crystals can all be created using cremains, allowing you to hold your loved one close to you as you go about your daily life. These pieces are a lovely way to remember your loved one.

Burial At Sea

If you'd prefer to arrange a unique memorial ceremony for your loved one, burial at sea may be the way to go. You can often work with captains in seaside towns to arrange for specific permits in order to hold these ceremonies. They aren't especially expensive, and most municipalities only require that you are a specific distance from shore before spreading the ashes.

After having a loved one cremated, it can be difficult to determine what to do with the cremains. This important decision can seem overwhelming, but there are numerous unique options available. You can opt to have art or jewelry made with the cremains, or you can arrange a unique ceremony for your loved one. This is a decision that will take careful consideration, but once you've thought about it and planned carefully, you can have an item or experience that you'll remember forever.
